My Literary Journey - impact of studying literature

Name : Nidhi B. Dave

B.A. Sem 6
College - R.M.D. Mahila college, Valukad

Soon, am going to complete my journey of 3 years of studying literature, so now it's necessary for me to look back and observe changes in my due to literature. This process started from the very first day of my B.A.(Bachelor of Arts)in English literature. and now this process is about the end with the final year of B.A. in English literature.

When  someone asked about literature without thinking they say that, "Literature is a mirror of society."But now I can say that Literature is not only a mirror image of society but  I say"Literature is true life". because literature provides, insight knowledge, wisdom and Emotional towards the person who is a part of it entirely. Life is manifested in the form of literature without literature, life ceases to exist.it is a human tragedy, desire and feelings.

It is very well said that literature is the mirror of society and its members. Literature has shaped my mind in a very productive way. From the point when my mind was an empty box to the point, it is slowly turning into a pandora of productive and useful thoughts. Literature inspires you, Motivates you, increases your knowledge and exposes you to new thoughts and ideas. Literature has the power of transforming one's mind. it has brought a new confidence in me. It not only inspires you to read but also to write and criticize.  Reading literature opens up a new world for you, a world where anything is possible if you just believe and thus reading has made me an optimistic and always ready to take on a challenge type of person.

Literature is not just imaginative stories written in leisure time only for entertainment. But is a reflection of time, place and society in which we are living. Literature is a mirror or photographic image of society. equally, literature is also an x-ray image portraying ugly, darker sides of society.
Literature is made up of felling, But it does not make people emotional fools.it does not teach only feeling, it gives you history the way no one gives.it provides you with the critical eyesight. Which only few have.when I choose to study literature  , I choose to study humans. Humans are always complicated, but then even can teach you the great thing about them for example Gogol has taught me to identify crises and diaspora. Literature also has given names to those weird feelings. Not only feelings. But it has taught me some harsh realities also. For example, Mr Gessler thought me that how industrialisation has eaten up his business and how quality is sacrificed in mass productions. Pecola through her entire life. has taught me how racism work and how harmful it is. Hamlet taught me to think and Othello taught me to act. Doctor Faustus taught me to seek knowledge. milton's Eve taught me to questions. Dr Jakyll and Mr Hyde taught me how humans have two faces - one public and the other person. It gave me a deep understanding of the human psyche. Ghasiram kotwal taught me that at what extent one can fall to gain power.
The namesake novel by jumpa Lahiri teaches me that how one can feel when they are far away from their own culture and the importance of culture.  William Shakespeare and his tragedies are all-time favourites of mine. It gives aesthetic delight and in the end because of catharsis, purgation of emotion happens and we feel relaxed and calm. Literature has taught me not to be dependent on someone else. By doing that literature has made me free. Free from every shackles and bondage of life.it has given us wings and vision of Eagle and also the stamina to fly high. Chetan Bhagat's book Revolution 2020 teaches me two thoughts "The goodness never dies." And "Sometimes life is not about what you want to do but what you ought to do."

Literature provides comfort to the people but is also has the axe to broke the frozenness inside the people's minds.it drags you out of your comfort zone. It makes you feel things that have never happened to you. It puts you in the situation of "To be or not to be".But at the end, it also taught you that, "Readiness is all."

  • Conclusion

Thus, these are the things I learnt from literature.
